The “late 1800s” could encompass anything between 1850-1900, although it seems more likely to be 1870 onward. A big clue was dropped from Avalanche's Head of Story, Adrian Ropp, in a PlayStation Blog post, where he says in reference to the game's setting, “ Goblins were around, but this lot certainly didn't work at Gringotts. ” Canon history states that in 1865, the Ministry of Magic relinquished full control of Gringotts Wizarding Bank to the goblins, who were still in charge when Harry Potter made his first visit in The Sorcerer's Stone . Despite being an intelligent humanoid race, goblins have faced much adversity and persecution in the Harry Potter universe, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries when goblin rebellions were prevalent. Many wizards still consider them a subservient race, and to this day they are forbidden from using wands by The Ministry of Magic. In Chapter 15 of The Order of the Phoenix, the Daily Prophet claimed there were still disruptive groups of goblins even during the 1990s, although no concrete evidence supported the newspaper's claim. It seems entirely likely for some goblins to still harbor resentment towards wizards. In 1877, the 393rd Quidditch World Cup became known as “ The Tournament that Nobody Remembers, ” as a venue was selected, tickets were sold, and players were injured, but no one can recall the events of that day. While it's entirely possible Hogwarts Legacy happens prior to the Ministry returning control of Gringotts back to the goblins, it's more likely that Ropp's statement is referring to an event that happened in the 1870s. Because he specifics “ this lot, ” he could be talking about the Goblin Liberation Front — a group of radicals that advocated for goblin rights during this time. This wouldn't necessarily mean goblins weren't at Gringotts. Rather, only the ones the player encounters may be from this extremist group. When footage of Hogwarts Legacy was leaked in 2018, it showed the player attacking what looked like a goblin hoard, though this wasn't shown in the official trailer. If this is indeed the “ lot ” Ropp is referencing, it may mean players won't see the goblins inside of Gringo
